Process for Graduation


For the M.S. Degree:

  1. Student is admitted, requirements and deficiencies are identified based on program requirements.
  2. Student chooses a faculty advisor and thesis committee (at least 3 members of the graduate faculty from the program).
  3. Student and advisor develops and files Plan of Study online at https://gradplan.engr.ku.edu (must be completed in the first semester).
  4. Student completes required coursework and thesis.
  5. During semester of graduation, student verifies the Plan of Study is complete with graduate program assistant.
  6. Student schedules oral thesis defense date with committee members and informs graduate program assistant of date.
  7. Graduate program assistant requests degree check from Dean’s office at least 2 weeks prior to thesis defense date.
  8. Student files application for degree through Enroll & Pay>Learner Services>Academics>Apply for Degree by semester deadline.
  9. Student passes defense, makes necessary changes to thesis as recommended by committee, then the committee members sign thesis.
  10. Notification that student has passed defense is sent to the Dean’s Office.
  11. Student submits electronic thesis to ProQuest/UMI at: http://dissertations.umi.com/ku/ and any additional bound copies required by the program; thesis is checked for Graduate School formatting standards.
  12. Student verifies with Dean’s Office that all degree requirements are complete, turns in thesis title and acceptance pages, and pays require thesis fee.
  13. Student graduates.

For the Ph.D. Degree:

  1. Student is admitted, requirements and deficiencies are identified based on program requirements.
  2. Student takes and passes the qualifying exam.
  3. Student chooses a faculty advisor and dissertation committee.
  4. Student and advisor develops and files Plan of Study online at https://gradplan.engr.ku.edu (must be completed in the second semester).
  5. Student meets research skills and residency requirements.
  6. Student works on completion of required coursework (core, track requirements, and electives) and dissertation research.
  7. Student schedules comprehensive oral exam with committee and informs graduate program assistant.
  8. Graduate program assistant requests degree check from Dean’s office at least 2 weeks prior to exam.
  9. Student passes comprehensive exam.
  10. Student becomes candidate for Doctor of Philosophy degree.
  11. Candidate enrolls for post-comprehensive enrollment; candidate must complete 18 hrs of post-comp courses before graduation.
  12. Candidate completes Doctoral Thesis.
  13. Candidate submits dissertation to dissertation committee (5 months must pass between comprehensive exam and the final oral exam).
  14. Dissertation committee accepts candidate’s final draft of dissertation.
  15. After all degree requirements are met, student requests a final oral exam date from committee and informs graduate program assistant.
  16. Graduate program assistant requests degree check from Dean’s office at least 3 weeks prior to exam.
  17. Time and place for final oral exam are scheduled by the program and notification is sent to Dean’s office for publication in news medium.
  18. Candidate takes final oral exam and defends dissertation.
  19. Candidate passes final oral exam, makes necessary changes as recommended by committee, then the members of dissertation committee sign dissertation.
  20. Candidate submits electronic thesis to ProQuest/UMI at: http://dissertations.umi.com/ku/ and any additional bound copies required by the program; thesis is checked for Graduate School formatting standards.
  21. Candidate files application for degree through Enroll & Pay>Learner Services>Academics>Apply for Degree by semester deadline.
  22. Candidate verifies with Program office and the Dean’s Office that all degree requirements are complete, turns in thesis title and acceptance pages, and pays require thesis fee.
  23. Candidate graduates.
